Early Intervention in Psychosis

The Wakefield early intervention in psychosis team supports the early identification of psychosis in people aged 14 to 65.

The team offers support for those experiencing a first episode psychosis in ages 14 to 65 and those who may be at risk of psychosis (ARMS) in the ages of 14 to 35.

The team provides psychosocial interventions (treating and preventing a condition using educational and behavioural approaches) to improve the long-term outcomes for people experiencing psychosis. The team support people’s treatment and recovery outside of the mainstream mental health system.

Opening times / out of hours opening

  • Monday - Thursday : 8:30 am - 5:00 pm
  • Friday : 8:30 am - 4:30 pm

Age range / who can access the service

Age range is for a FEP 14 -65, ARMS 14 – 35, Extended assessment 14 – 65.

Key support offer

  • Medical reviews from our consultant
  • Psychological intervention – CBTp (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Psychosis)
  • EMDR, Family intervention
  • Pharmacological Intervention – including administering depot medication
  • Service users that have not responded adequately to treatment with at least 2 antipsychotic drugs offered clozapine
  • Service users who wish to find or return to work are offered supported employment programmes.
  • Educational and vocational support
  • Comprehensive physical health assessments
  • Service users are offered combined healthy eating and physical activity programmes and help to stop smoking
  • Carers are offered carer-focused education and support programmes.

  • Crisis response or crisis intervention
  • General support
  • Ongoing treatment after three years.

Accessibility information for service

We have access to in person and over the phone translation services, our base offers accessible rooms and we offer home visits, we work with people suffering with sight and hearing and language problems and we provide text and email service and number of video conferencing services if required.

Waiting times / triage timescales

From point of receiving a referral we will aim to undertake our specialist assessment and get people allocated within 14 days

Accessment process

After we have received a referral, we will complete an assessment which will focus on your mental health and the experiences you are having. We will work with you to understand your mental health needs and your goals for recovery. We will then develop a care plan which will include the identified needs and what their personal goals for their mental health are, working with the individual in beginning their recovery.
